As a dedicated barefoot shoe enthusiast, I was eager to try out Xero Shoes’ Aptos model and experience its praised “barefoot” feel first-hand.

Slipping on the Aptos was a game-changer. The barely-there flexible sole allowed my feet to move and splay naturally as if I were actually barefoot. Yet I still had just enough protection for all-day wear on the go.

After logging many miles wearing the Aptos for everything from dog walks to trips to the farmer’s market, and even an upscale dinner I’m rating them a 9 out of 10. The featherlight feel and adjustable fit are superb. However, I did have one minor complaint that I’ll expand on shortly.

I purchased my pair at a steep discount for under $60 and have been blown away by the value, hence the 9/10. For a barefoot shoe devotee like myself, the Aptos deliver on all fronts—versatility, freedom of motion, and ground feel.

Xero Shoes Review – Aptos, casual hemp canvas

The Xero Shoes Aptos is a casual, slip-on style shoe constructed with many of the same barefoot-friendly features found in the brand’s running shoes.

As an avid barefoot runner for over 5 years, I was drawn to the Aptos for its flexibility, low 4mm stack height, and foot-shaped toe box. I hoped it would provide the comfort and freedom of movement I’d come to love in my other minimalist shoes. The casual style seemed ideal for everyday wear.

In this review, I’ll share impressions from my firsthand experience using the Aptos both casually and for fitness. I have over 500 miles of experience running in barefoot shoes, so I’m quite familiar with what to look for. Read on to learn if the Aptos may be the ideal minimalist shoe choice for you too!

First Impressions

Xero Shoes Aptos in box

Upon unboxing the Aptos, I was pleased with the simple yet stylish slip-on design. The hemp canvas upper gives it an earthy, natural look while the sole is made from FeelTrue rubber for flexibility and ground feel.

Slipping them on for the first time, I was amazed at how incredibly lightweight they felt underfoot. Each shoe weighs just 5.5 oz, so walking in them almost feels like going barefoot.

The casual, slipper-like design means the Aptos can easily be worn for a variety of activities. I’ve worn mine while:

  • Running errands
  • Travelling by plane
  • Working from home
  • Walking the dog
  • Light workouts
  • Casual evenings out

The simple styling matches well with jeans, shorts, or casual wear. I appreciate how quick and easy they are to slip on when heading out the door.

Fit and Sizing

I normally wear a size 10 in most athletic shoes and the Xero Aptos fit me perfectly in size 10. I’d recommend ordering your regular shoe size.

The fit through the toe box and forefoot is nice and wide to let your toes splay naturally. The upper canvas material has a bit of stretch to accommodate different foot shapes.

Xero Shoes Aptos Wide toebox

The Aptos has a wide toe box for natural foot movement and comfort.

Around the heel, the padded collar grips the ankle snugly while allowing the Achilles area to move freely. This normally helps prevent rubbing, however, in my case, I ended up with a small irritation at the back of the foot, most likely due to not ordering a smaller size.

I found the break-in period to be quick and painless. The materials are flexible out of the box. Within 1-2 wears, the Aptos molded comfortably to my feet.

The irritation however lasted for a good while. Luckily I had some good plasters that kept the discomfort at a minimum. In the end, I can say it was well worth it.

Performance and Traction

With its 4mm FeelTrue rubber sole and minimalist flexible design, I’ve found the Aptos performs wonderfully for light trails, walking, travel, and indoor wear.

The tread isn’t overly aggressive but provides decent traction on most surfaces, wet or dry. I wore them hiking on gravel trails during a light drizzle and my feet maintained grip well.

The thin sole allows you to intimately feel the ground beneath your feet. It’s not ideal for harsh or overly rocky terrain but works great on smoother paths. Traction is definitely better than a typical sandal or flip-flop.

The Aptos’ sole isn’t overly aggressive but provides decent traction.

I wouldn’t choose the Aptos for hardcore trail running or hiking but they’re perfectly grippy for casual outdoor wear and walking. Indoors, the tread grips floors nicely without feeling clunky.

One of the Aptos’ strongest assets is its exceptional comfort for all-day wear. The materials feel luxuriously soft and flexible against the skin.

The wide toe box accommodates natural toe splaying without any pinching or discomfort. The canvas upper moulds smoothly to the shape of your feet.

There is ample padding around the collar with zero rigid seams or stitching to irritate the ankle. I’ve worn my Aptos for full days of travelling and my feet felt great.

Initially, after long periods of wear, the cord lacing dug slightly into the top of my foot. But after a quick break-in period, the shoes now feel like slippers. I experience no pain even after hours of wear.

For me, the Aptos required almost no break-in period to feel pleasant on my feet right out of the box. However, those new to minimalist shoes may want to slowly increase wear time.

Durability and Maintenance

Considering their minimalist lightweight design, the Aptos have held up well so far in durability. I’ve put over 100 miles on them in the past 2 months wearing them for fitness and especially daily use.

The hemp canvas upper shows some signs of wear but no major tears or holes yet. A bit of pilling has developed on the interior heel collar lining but it hasn’t impacted comfort or performance.

One area to note is odour control. Due to the breathable nature of the canvas upper, the Aptos can develop foot odour after several wears. I’d recommend removing the insoles and washing them periodically. The shoes can also be spot-cleaned as needed.

For storage, be sure not to leave them crumpled tightly as the flexible sole can crease. I lightly stuff the toes with socks when not being worn which helps maintain the shape.

Overall, with proper care, I’d expect to get several months to a year or more of wear from the Aptos before needing to be replaced. For the price, they offer good durability for a flexible minimalist shoe.

Value and Cost

The Xero Shoes Aptos used to retail for $94.99 directly from Xero Shoes’ website. However, today they are only $64.99. In the realm of minimalist footwear, I find this an excellent value.

They are priced similarly to other casual barefoot shoes while offering greater style versatility in my opinion. Most competitors lack the Aptos’ casual slip-on design.

Considering the high-quality materials, comfort, and barefoot design, the Aptos offers fantastic value at under $100. I’d rather pay more for an ethical, sustainable product than buy a cheaper knock-off.

For shoppers new to minimalist shoes, Xero offers excellent customer service support to help find the right size and fit if needed.

My Experiences Wearing the Aptos

I’ve had many great experiences in my Aptos that reinforce why I love minimalist footwear. Here are a few anecdotes:

  • Grocery store runs: Usually a quick chore in regular shoes, grocery runs become fun in the Aptos! I feel nimble skippping up and down the aisles and my feet feel great even after an hour wandering the store.
  • Airport security: Often a hassle taking shoes on and off, the Aptos allow me to swiftly slip in and out at security checkpoints. Their flexibility also makes legs less tired compared to rigid shoes when standing in line.
  • Dog walks: Walking the dog is an everyday pleasure in the Aptos. I enjoy feeling more connected to the ground beneath my feet, all while looking more stylish than typical athletic shoes. The roomy toe box gives me a feeling of freedom.
  • Yoga: For in-home yoga practice, the Aptos provide a wonderful barefoot-feel mat. The thin flexible sole improves balance poses like tree or dancer. Their slip-on design also makes them perfect for heading to a studio class.

Wearing the Aptos regularly has strengthened my feet, improved my balance, and made everyday activities more enjoyable. Their minimalist design keeps me feeling agile and adventurous.

Pros and Cons

Based on my experience wearing the Aptos for fitness and daily use, here are the main pros and cons:

  • Roomy toe box for natural foot shape and toe splaying
  • Ultra lightweight and flexible
  • Provides groundfeel yet more protection than true barefoot
  • Fun colors and stylish, versatile design
  • Breathable and quick-drying hemp canvas upper
  • Excellent for travels and athleisure wear
  • Great value and price point under $100

  • Minimal traction for very uneven or wet terrain
  • Can develop foot odor if not washed regularly
  • Collar liner may pill over time
  • Not as durable as a heavyweight hiking shoe
  • Requires gradual break-in period for some
  • May cause some irritation if sizing isn’t spot on

Conclusion and Recommendations

Overall, I’m thrilled with the Xero Shoes Aptos and find them to be a stylish, comfortable, and versatile minimalist shoe priced affordably under $100.

They are ideally suited for casual walks, travels, athleisure and indoor wear. While suitable for light trails, they lack heavy traction and protection for hardcore hiking.

I recommend the Aptos to anyone seeking a flexible, foot-shaped barefoot casual shoe. They provide just enough protection for varied environments while retaining a superb barefoot feel.

For potential buyers, I suggest ordering your regular shoe size and gradually breaking them in. Expect some initial snugness that will relax as the Aptos mold to your feet. Be sure to wash regularly to prevent odors.

The Perfect Sidekick for Dry-Weather Dog Walks: Xero Shoes Aptos

Dog walking
This is Santa

Okay, let’s get into it. You love your dog, but not enough to venture out into the great muddy yonder after a rainfall, right? No judgment here; I’m in the same boat. That’s where the Xero Shoes Aptos come to the rescue for all of us fair-weather dog walkers.

First things first, these shoes are vegan. No leather, just a hemp slip-on that’s as easy to put on as it is to avoid a puddle. And the width? Your feet have room to breathe. Even in thin socks, your toes can spread out and enjoy the walk as much as your four-legged friend does.

Now, let’s talk cleaning. Unlike some other shoes I’ve tried, the Aptos aren’t washing machine-friendly. A damp cloth or brush will do the trick for any muck you might pick up along the way. And remember, they’re quick-drying too! The white parts might require a bit of extra attention but with a serious scrub I managed to get these shoes fairly decent looking, even after 6 months of intense wear. After giving these shoes a thorough review, it’s clear that the Xero Shoes Aptos are the Swiss Army knife of footwear. What sets them apart? Flexibility. Co-founder Steven wasn’t kidding when he emphasized this spec. Whether you’re in the Phoenix heat or an air-conditioned gym, these shoes are your go-to.

I’ve tried many a pair from Xero, and these stand out for their adaptability. It’s not just a good shoe; it’s an excellent one. And they come at an affordable price, a double win in my book.

Need more room or less cushion? The Aptos feature a removable insole. That’s a game-changer if you’re looking to adjust the feel for different activities.

  • And here’s a pro tip: Keep an eye on Xero’s shipping deals and discounts. They offer secure EU shipping, so whether you’re stateside or across the pond, you’re covered.
