In this in-depth review, we’ll explore how these lightweight, waterproof boots stack up in terms of fit, comfort, durability, and overall performance on the trail. Whether you’re a seasoned minimalist hiker or just starting your barefoot journey, read on to discover if the Xcursion Fusion is the right choice for your next adventure.
The boots arrive with minimal packaging, reflecting Xero Shoes’ commitment to sustainability. The Xcursion Fusion has a sleek, modern design with a welded upper and protective toe cap.
The materials feel durable and abrasion-resistant, promising long-lasting performance on the trail. The boots are surprisingly lightweight for a waterproof hiking boot, weighing just 388 grams (13.7 oz) each for a Men’s size 8.
Pros and Cons
Pros
Durable toe cap protects against rocks and roots
Waterproof membrane keeps feet dry in wet conditions and they do this job well
Lightweight at just 20.4 oz (570 grams) for the pair – it’s a good weight considering what they are
Removable insole allows for a more barefoot feel – it’s always nice to be able to take it to the next level
Zero-drop sole promotes proper barefoot posture and gait, we need more boots like this
Cons
Runs small, narrow; may need to size up – many people have discovered these to be slightly small and therefore Xero recommends sizing up half a size
3.5mm lugs offer limited traction on loose terrain – they are some of the best barefoot boots for traction but many regular boots are better
Waterproof membrane reduces breathability, leading to hot feet – you might enjoy these more in a colder climate
Flexible upper provides minimal ankle support and stability. For people used to big regular boots, it might take some time to adjust.

Trying on the boots, the fit is snug and secure, with a roomy toe box that allows for natural toe splay. The zero-drop sole and flexible construction are immediately apparent, providing a barefoot-like feel.
The 10mm FeelTrue sole with 3.5mm lugs offers substantial thickness for protection and traction, while still maintaining good ground feel. The waterproof membrane and outer mesh give confidence that these boots will perform well in wet conditions, although there is some initial concern about breathability in hot weather.

The boots are comfortable right out of the box, with no noticeable break-in period required.
Waterproofing is awesome on the Xcursion Fusion

The waterproofing on these Xcursion Fusion boots from Xero Shoes really impressed me. They have a seam-sealed inner bootie and waterproof membrane behind the mesh upper that kept my feet completely dry when walking through puddles, mud, and even standing in a bathtub full of water for several minutes.
The gusseted tongue extends up to prevent water from entering around the laces too. While waterproof membranes can make some boots feel hot and non-breathable, I didn’t have that issue with the Xcursion Fusion. My feet stayed reasonably cool and dry on the trails.

Granted, no waterproofing lasts forever with heavy use. But based on my testing, the waterproof construction on these boots is highly effective and reliable for:
It gives me confidence to tackle rugged terrain without worrying about soaked feet. The waterproofing is a major advantage that sets the Xcursion Fusion apart from Xero’s other hiking shoes.

Fit and Sizing
The Xero Shoes Xcursion Fusion runs true to size in length but is narrower than other Xero Shoes models. They fit medium to high volume feet well, accommodating tall insteps and full feet.
However, the toe box is more rounded compared to the wider, foot-shaped design of some barefoot boots, which may not suit those with very wide feet or long toes. My friend found they needed to size up a half size from their usual Xero Shoes size to get the proper width.

Even then, they still found the toe box too narrow, especially compared to the previous version of the Xcursion. The boots seem to fit more like a traditional hiking boot in terms of width. The laces allow for a secure fit through the midfoot and ankle, but sometimes found the lacing system caused uncomfortable pressure points or wrinkling of the upper material. It may take some experimentation with lacing techniques to dial in the optimal fit without creating hot spots.
Those with particularly wide feet may want to consider other barefoot hiking boot options with a more anatomically-shaped toe box. But for most, sizing up a half size should provide a comfortable, secure fit in the Xero Shoes Xcursion Fusion.
Weight and Flexibility
At around 10 oz per shoe, the Xcursion Fusion is incredibly lightweight for a hiking boot. The flexible sole allows your feet to bend and move naturally with each step, while a removable 2mm insole provides added protection without compromising ground feel.

The sole is slightly stiffer than other barefoot boots but breaks in and softens up with wear. The 3.5mm lugs provide excellent traction on the trail.
The Xcursion Fusion features a waterproof membrane that effectively keeps feet dry in wet conditions, even when standing in creeks and puddles. The outer mesh material also repels water, providing additional protection from the elements.
However, the waterproofing does slightly reduce breathability compared to non-waterproof models. In hot weather, feet may experience some sweating, but for cold and wet conditions, the waterproofing is invaluable.
The Xcursion Fusion excels in comfort right out of the box, with a wide toe box and flexible materials that allow natural foot splay and flex. The zero-drop sole promotes a natural gait, and the boots provide reliable traction and protection while maintaining good ground feel on various terrains. Hikers can comfortably walk up to 10 miles a day without discomfort, making these boots an excellent choice for day hikes and lightweight backpacking.
Comparing Xcursion Fusion to Other Xero Models

Compared to other Xero Shoes hiking boots like the original Xcursion and the Daylite Hiker, the Xcursion Fusion offers a few key upgrades:
- A new 10mm FeelTrue sole with 3.5mm lugs provides even better traction and protection than the original Xcursion, without sacrificing ground feel.
The welded upper with integrated tension straps allows a more secure and abrasion-resistant fit compared to the Daylite Hiker. The waterproof membrane and outer mesh make the Xcursion Fusion better suited for wet conditions than the non-waterproof Daylite Hiker. However, the added features of the Xcursion Fusion do result in a slightly heavier and less breathable boot compared to the Daylite Hiker. For hot weather hiking, a non-waterproof model like the Mesa Trail may be a better choice. But for hikers seeking a waterproof, barefoot-style boot with maximum protection, the Xcursion Fusion is the most capable and feature-rich option in the Xero Shoes lineup.
After 100+ miles of rugged use, the abrasion-resistant materials and stitching remain intact, with only slight wear on the lugs. The boots are expected to last 400-500 miles, demonstrating their durability.

The Xero Shoes Xcursion Fusion retails for around $150, placing it in the mid-range for hiking boots. Considering its unique combination of barefoot features and hiking boot protection, the Xcursion Fusion offers excellent value for the price.
The boot’s durable construction, waterproofing, and versatile performance make it suitable for everything from day hikes to multi-day backpacking trips, providing value for a variety of uses. The 5,000 mile sole warranty further adds to the boot’s long-term value.
Compared to other barefoot hiking boots on the market, the Xcursion Fusion is competitively priced. It’s more affordable than some high-end minimalist boots while offering comparable or better features and performance.
For those seeking a barefoot hiking experience without sacrificing protection and durability, the Xero Shoes Xcursion Fusion delivers impressive value at its price point.

For more info Here is our original Alpine Review
In essence, the Alpine is Xero’s most insulated and protective boot made for winter conditions like snow and cold temperatures. The Xcursion Fusion sacrifices warmth for a lighter, more flexible design focused on hiking and backpacking in milder conditions. The Alpine prioritizes insulation and weather protection, while the Xcursion emphasizes agility and a barefoot feel on the trail.
