Cookies And Analytics

BareTread uses one analytics tool, Google Analytics 4, and nothing else. It tells me which reviews people actually read so I know what is worth writing next. There is no advertising network on this site, no retargeting, and no social tracking pixels.

Analytics does not run until you allow it. On your first visit a small card appears at the bottom of the screen with two choices. Nothing is loaded and no analytics cookie is set until you press Allow. If you press No thanks, or simply ignore the card, Google Analytics is never loaded on any page, and any analytics cookies already in your browser from earlier visits are deleted.

If you do allow it, these cookies are set by Google Analytics:

  • _ga: distinguishes one browser from another. Expires after about 400 days.
  • _ga_40XS1Q7LXQ: keeps track of a single visit. Expires after about 400 days.

The data collected includes the pages you view, roughly when and for how long, your approximate location from your IP address, and your device and browser type. It is sent to Google, which acts as my data processor, and may be processed outside the UK, including in the United States, under the safeguards Google publishes for its own transfers. I cannot see who you are from it and I never try to.

You can change your mind at any time. There is a Cookie choice button at the bottom of every page which brings the card back so you can switch your answer. Your choice is remembered in your browser for 12 months, after which you will be asked again. Clearing your browser storage also resets it.

Some links to shops on this site are affiliate links. If you buy something after following one, the retailer pays me a small commission at no extra cost to you. This never changes what I write about a shoe.

These links are handled by affiliate networks, mainly Awin and the Amazon Associates programme. When you click one, the network records the click so a sale can be credited back to this site. That happens on the retailer’s side and is governed by their own privacy policies, not mine. It is not analytics and it does not tell me anything about you personally.
